Here’s some gems from their old school room. Its quite a different scene to today’s classroom even with some of the things here from mixed periods.
This building was the former Isis Central Mill State School and it contains a wealth of memorabilia.
The long desks with a slot for a slate have an open shelf underneath. My husband remembers these desks and I certainly sat on something similarly hard and uncomfortable in the small 2 teacher school I attended.
When learning to read, Dick and Dora appeared in early learners’ classrooms.
I remember these books.
Thank goodness our grandchildren now have access to a wonderful wide range of books and Dora and her friends are just memories for their grandparents.
Did you read Dick and Dora books at school?
Yes it does bring back memories. I remember the Dick and Dora books as well as the Wide Range Readers. Our desk were only 2 person desks, but just as hard.
ReplyDeleteI remember Dick and Dora very well Carmel. I loved that book and really enjoyed seeing it again
ReplyDeleteI don't remember Dick and Dora but certainly remember blackboards, hard uncomfortable chairs, inkwwells and Sisters of Mercy who had no hesitation in caning ten year olds.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read Dick and Dora but I did find my old Travelling On book on the shelf the other day published by the NSW Education committee compiled by the Infants' Reading Committee and illustrated by Katherine Morris. It's a chapter book of sorts and full of, to my mind, quite boring stories...probably many highly politically incorrect now. I loved the first day of school every year. New pencils and new books. A fresh start.
