Sometimes a journey may be across the seas or simply a move between houses. Here the Horgan family moved from Riverton where Anne was born to a farm near Mintaro then on to Glenelg, all locations within South Australia.
A Rosary ring has a fixed inner ring with an outer ring that spins freely, it is decorated with ten small beads and a cross. It is designed for those who wish to pray and keep track of their prayers. The Rosary is a Catholic prayer that consists of a series of ten Hail Mary's interspersed with the Lord's Prayer.

1890 - Birth: Alice Rose EDDY, Broken Hill, New South Wales
Alice was a 2nd cousin once removed, an O'Dea descendant. She was the eldest child born to Bridget Rose O’Dea and J Eddy in Broken Hill. Her brother John Stephens Eddy was born in the following year followed by Thomas Alfred Eddy in 1892..
Alice was 21 when she married Ernest Carnie but less than four years later her funeral notice appeared in the Broken Hill newspaper. Her parents, brothers and her husband must have been devastated to have lost her at such a young age.
A sad journey from Cummins St. to the Catholic cemetery in Broken Hill.

1917 - Birth: Anne Josephine HORGAN, Riverton, South Australia, - 2nd cousin once removed
Anne, or Nan as she was known, was the youngest of six children born to Thomas James Horgan and Margaret Anne Dempsey. Her parents moved the family from Mintaro to Glenelg in Adelaide in 1918 when her father took up a position with the Wheat Board.
The Horgans were a devout Catholic family and when Nan was 14, her sister Joan was professed as a Dominican nun. Another sister Maimie, had married in 1935 and in 1938 Nan was bridesmaid for her sister Margaret, known as Peg.(1) Her older brother Tom was ordained a priest when Nan was 24.(2)
A ring’s journey
In March this year an elderly cousin talked to me about these sisters, Maimie, Peg and Nan. She remembered them as elegant, always beautifully dressed ladies when they visited their younger cousins at the McInerney residence in Moorhouse Tce. in Riverton. On one of these visits a Rosary ring was given to this cousin and it has now found its way back to a Horgan woman, two generations younger.

The Rosary ring looks a very special memento indeed
ReplyDeleteDespite growing up Catholic, I’ve never seen or heard of a Rosary ring…such a special treasure. I had to count the bumps to ensure there were 10 ;) I wonder did Alice die in childbirth.
ReplyDeleteThat was my thought too but I have minimum details for various degrees of cousins removed but interesting to have them in the tree.
